Los Angeles Blades - WHL

The original Los Angeles Blades played in the Western Hockey League (WHL), a minor league circuit based on the West Coast,?? from 1961 to 1967. The team began as the Victoria (B.C.) Cougars in 1949. They were sold and moved to Los Angeles in 1961. Fearing the American Hockey League and the WHL were going to merge and form a second major hockey league, the National Hockey League (NHL) awarded six expansion franchise in 1966 including one for Los Angeles to be called the Kings. The Blades folded, while the rival San Francisco Seals gained a slot as one of the NHL's expansion teams. In 1978, a new Blades team hit the ice for one season in the Pacific Coast Hockey League.
