On Thursday, July 11, 1974, the Jacksonville Sharks opened the inaugural World Football League season against the New York Stars before 59,112 fans at the Gator Bowl. More big crowds followed-- until it was revealed most of the tickets and been given away or steeply discounted. By mid-October the league revoked the franchise.
