50th Anniversary World Football League

On October 2, 1973, a press conference was held in Chicago to announce the formation of the the World Football League (WFL). It kicked off in July of 1974 as a rival to the established National Football League (NFL). At first, it seemed like it would be a serious rival to the established league. After all, league founder Gary Davidson had already formed the American Basketball Association (ABA) to rival the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the World Hockey Association (WHA) to challenge the National Hockey League (NHL).
