The original American Basketball Association (ABA) was founded in 1967 as a challenger to the established NBA. After fierce competition between the two for fans and players, 4 ABA teams were absorbed by the NBA in 1976. The Kentucky Colonels, the league's most successful team, was oddly not among them, nor were the Spirits of St. Louis.
