In 1988, the Los Angeles Dodgers made history by winning their sixth World Series championship in franchise history. This team, affectionately known as the "Blue Crew," will always be remembered for their incredible talent and legendary moments on the field.
Gibson's home run
One of the most iconic moments in Dodgers history came during Game 1 of the World Series against the Oakland A's. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Dodgers down by a run, injured slugger Kirk Gibson hobbled to the plate as a pinch hitter. With a full count, Gibson connected with a Dennis Eckersley pitch and hit a two-run homer that sent the Dodgers bench and fans into a frenzy. This walk-off home run not only won the game for the Dodgers, but also set the tone for the entire series.
Talent all around
The '88 Dodgers were more than just one moment, though. They were a team filled with talented players who worked together to achieve greatness. Pitcher Orel Hershiser had an incredible season, setting a new record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched and earning the NL Cy Young Award. Outfielder, and eventual World Series MVP, Mickey Hatcher had a clutch performance in Game 1 and continued to contribute throughout the series.
Manager Tommy Lasorda also played a crucial role in leading the team to victory. He had a knack for bringing out the best in his players and instilling a winning mentality in the clubhouse. His leadership and passion for the game was infectious and helped propel the Dodgers to the a world championship.
