WYDD first signed on in 1967 as a jazz station. In the '70s it switched to a more progressive, free-form AOR format, before flipping to top 40 in the '80s. As top 40 stations go, though, it was pretty adventurous, playing songs that were in heavy rotation on MTV but not necessarily high-charting hits, as well songs from the UK singles chart. At midnight, fans could tune into the 12-60 Club, which featured extended remixes of tracks by the day's new wave and alternative bands. The station gradually drifted more towards a chart-friendly format and in 1989 became WNRJ with a format focused on dance music.
