Dayton's public TV station, Channel 16, was originally licensed as a commercial broadcaster called WKTR. The station, licensed to Kettering, went on the air in 1967 and was an independent station, though it sometimes carried programs from ABC. The station was to be sold a company out West in 1971, but the deal fell through and the station went dark. In 1972, the license was reassigned to Ohio Educational Broadcasting and the station returned as a public TV station.
