In its second season, 1979/80, the Major Indoor Soccer League welcomed the Wichita Wings. The team competed in every subsequent season until the league's demise in 1992 and was immensely popular. They went on to play in the National Professional Soccer League until 2001. Backed by its fan group, the Orange Army, the Wings often played before sell-out crowds at the 9600-seat Kansas Coliseum. Competitive for most of their existence, they never won a league title, often falling to arch rivals the St. Louis Steamers in the playoffs.
