From 1969 to 1980, it was a Memorial Day Weekend tradition. At its peak, more than 300,000 rafters partook in this annual raft race held on the Chattahoochee River (where word has it, it gets hotter than a hoochey-coochey). The race started at Morgan Falls Dam in Sandy Springs and ended at the shallow raft take-out a few hundred yards north of Interstate 285 in Vinings. In the race's early days, famous radio station WQXI, the inspiration for WKRP in Cincinnati, was a sponsor. After the 1980 race, the park service insisted organizers pay for security and clean-up for future contests. The organizers refused, and the Rambin' Raft Race was no more.
