The Memphis Hound Dogs were a proposed NFL team that would have started play in 1995 had the city been granted a franchise. Jacksonville and Charlotte were chosen instead, beating out Baltimore and St. Louis, as well as Memphis. The former owner of the Memphis Showboats USFL team was in the ownership group, as was Fred Smith, head of FedEx. After losing the expansion bid, Smith (by himself) accepted a franchise in the Canadian Football League called the Mad Dogs. Elvis Presley Enterprises was also part of the Memphis ownership group.
