Jim Crow laws were state and local ordinances that enforced racial segregation in the South. These laws were passed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by white Southern Democrat-dominated state legislatures to disenfranchise and remove political and economic gains made by African Americans people during the post-Civil War Reconstruction period. Upheld by the supreme Court in 1896, they were finally abolished in 1965 with the passage of sweeping civil rights legislation.
