The original San Jose Earthquakes played in the old North American Soccer League?? (NASL)??beginning in 1974. In 1983 and 1984, they were known as the Golden Bay Earthquakes and played in the Major Indoor Soccer League??(MISL) while still fielding the outdoor team. They left the NASL in 1985. That league folded after that season. They went back to using San Jose as their geographic designation, and joined the Western Soccer Alliance for three seasons. They folded in 1988. The name was revived by the current MLS team, when the Clash changed their name to Earthquakes in 1999.
