The Columbus Thunderbolts of the Arena Football League (AFL) were established in 1991 and played their home games in the Expo Center. Their coach was Earl Bruce. In 1992, they moved to Cleveland, folding after the 1994 season. The AFL returned to Columbus in 2004, with the arrival of the Destroyers who had relocated from Buffalo.
