After the International Hockey League (IHL) Columbus Checkers folded in 1970, the NHL's California Golden Seals??acquired the rights to put an IHL farm team in Ohio's capital. In 1973, the Columbus Golden Seals were sold and renamed the Owls. Their home ice was the Fairgrounds Coliseum.
