The Columbus Thunderbolts of the Arena Football League (AFL) were established in 1991 and played their home games in the Expo Center. Their coach was Earl Bruce. In 1992, they moved to Cleveland, folding after the 1994 season. Arena football returned to Northeast Ohio in 2007 with the arrival of the Gladiators from Las Vegas.
