The Charlotte Hornets began as the New York Stars, a charter member of the World Football League in 1974. Just before week 14 of that season, the team left the Big Apple and headed to North Carolina. Before arriving in Charlotte, though, they played a game in Chicago still using the Stars nickname. The problem was, the team's helmets still had an "NY" emblazoned on them. The Stars equipment manager was buddies with the equipment manager of the Bears and so paid him a visit. With the help of a pair of scissors, a bunch of borrowed Chicago "C" decals became Charlotte "Cs" to put on the Stars' helmets to cover up the "NY".
Once in Charlotte, they became the Hornets and received all new uniforms complete witg new logo. The team drew a lot more fans down south and managed to make it to the WFL's second season. However, the Hornets, and the entire league, folded on October 22, 1975.
