The Buffalo Braves joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1970 as an expansion team. A dispute over the availability of dates at Buffalo's Memorial Auditorium caused the team to start looking for a new home outside of Western New York. At first a deal was struck to move the team to Miami. However, the franchise was sold to John Y. Brown who had previously owned the ABA's Kentucky Colonels.
