Betamax

Video recording had been around for a little over a decade when Sony introduced a home version of the technology called Betamax in 1975. Two years later, rival JVC introduced a competing format called VHS and the battle lines were drawn. In 1988, Sony conceded defeat and began making VHS machines. However, they continued to manufacture blank Beta tapes until 2015.
