Atlanta-Fulton County was built to attract pro baseball and pro football to Georgia's capital and largest city. It was proposed in 1961 and ground was broken in 1964 almost immediately after an unidentified Major League Baseball team agreed to move to Atlanta provided a stadium was built. For a time it looked like the A's would move to Georgia (among other possibilities), but it turned out to be the Milwaukee Braves who moved into the new ballpark in 1966. They were joined that fall by the Falcons, the National Football League's newest expansion franchise. Other tenants over the years included the Chiefs (also known as the Apollos for the 1973 season) of the North American Soccer League and the Crackers of baseball's AAA International League. The latter used the stadium in 1965 while the Braves played out their lease in Wisconsin. The Falcons moved to the Georgia Dome in 1992, while Braves moved to Turner Field in 1997. Both teams have since moved to new stadiums.
