The Birmingham Americans were charter members of the World Football League in 1974. They won that league's championship, World Bowl I, and as it turned out, only. Immediately after the game, a 22-21 win over the Florida Blazers, the team's uniforms were confiscated by sheriff's deputies to settle the teams debts. The team returned in 1975 with new ownership and a new name, Vulcans, in the "new" WFL. However, the Vulcans, and the rest of the league folded halfway through the season.
