WLRS took to the airwaves in 1964 under the auspices of the Louisville Radio School, thus the call letters. It was one of the few stand-alone FM stations in Kentucky, meaning it did not have an AM sibling station. By 1978, it had developed an Album Oriented Rock format and was topping the ratings in Louisville. In 1991 it switched to adult contemporary and re-branded as Mix 102. In 1997, it became "The Walrus," and changed its format to alternative rock. Just two year later the format changed again, this time along with call letters, to soft adult contemporary WULV. In 2002 the call letters were changed yet again, this time to WXMA as the format was changed to the popular syndicated Jack programming.
