Laika was the first living creature to orbit the Earth. A stray dog from the streets of Moscow, she made her historic flight on November 3, 1957 aboard Sputnik 2. Unfortunately she did not survive the mission. In 2008, a monument was erected to her near the space flight facility that prepared her for launch.
