After the Cleveland Lumberjacks folded in 2001, along with the entire International Hockey League (IHL) in 2001, the city welcomed the third incarnation of the Barons. The new team was an American Hockey League (AHL) team relocated from Lexington where they were known as the??Kentucky Thoroughblades. These Barons were owned by George and Gordon Gund, owners of the San Jose Sharks. The Barons were that club's farm team. Back in the '70s, the Gunds owned the NHL Barons. In 2006, the team moved Worcester, MA. That fall, the Lake Erie (now Cleveland) Monsters moved to town.
