Despite drawing some of the biggest crows in the first season of the World Football League (WFL), and winning World Bowl I (and as it turned out, only), the Birmingham Americans were out of business. In 1975, the entire league reorganized, with the remaining assets of the Americans being sold to a new group of investors. On March 7, 1975, they renamed the club the Vulcans, who picked up right where the Americans left off, both on the field and at the gate. The team managed a league-best 9 and 3 record before the "new" WFL collapsed on October 22, 1975. The Vulcans, along with the Memphis applied for membership in the National Football League but the older circuit politely declined.
