The San Antonio Gunslingers joined the United States Football League (USFL) in 1984 as an expansion team. They were one of six teams to join league for its second season. The team was owned by wealthy oilman Clinton Magnes. However, toward the end of the team's second season, the owner had become just oilman Clinton Magnes. By the end of the season, Magnes was almost out of money, and his players had to literally race each other to the bank to cash their checks before the account was depleted.
