The Canton Bulldogs were established in 1904. From 1903 to 1906, they played in the Ohio League. They did a second stint in that circuit from 1911 to 1919. In 1920, they were charter members of a new professional loop called the American Professional Football Association, or APFA. Two years later, the APFA became the National Football League. The Bulldogs played in that league from 1920 to 1923 and 1925-1926. They won the 1916, 1917, and 1919 Ohio League championships and were the NFL champions in 1922 and 1923. In 1921–1923, the Bulldogs ran off 25 straight games without a defeat which remains an NFL record.
