The Ghoul debuted on Channel 61 in 1971 as an homage to the popular Ghoulardi who left the air when Ernie Anderson, the man behind the character, left for L.A. in 1966. Ron Sweed, a huge Ghoulardi fan, created the Ghoul with Anderson's blessing. In the few years that Channel 61 was dark, The Ghoul found popularity in Detroit on Channel 50.
