Geri’s Hamburgers was founded in 1962 in Rockford, Illinois and modeled after the early McDonald’s of the day, including a design geared toward walk-up service. This was no accident, as one of Geri’s owners was a former vice president at McDonald's.
Later locations had inside seating as the chain grew to over a dozen locations in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. The company ceased operations in 1980, though a few locations continued on independently. The last Geri’s was in Beloit, Wisconsin and closed in 1999.
