The Chicago Blitz were charter members of the United States Football League (USFL) in 1983. Their head coach was the great George Allen who put together a powerful roster made up mostly of NFL veterans. The team made it to the play-offs but only twice drew more than 20,000 fans to Soldier Field. Oddly, the Chicago Fire of the ill-fated World Football League, six years earlier, had drawn better. After the season, the Blitz's owner Dr. Ted Diethrich essentially swapped teams with the Arizona Wranglers.
